Galco Pocket Protector Holster for Glock 26, 27, 33 (Natural, Ambi) Review

Galco Pocket Protector Holster for Glock 26, 27, 33 (Natural, Ambi)

While limiting the carrier to a relatively small handgun, pocket carry offers some unique advantages. Not only is the handgun completely covered and concealed, but the gun carrier can casually place a hand on the holstered/pocketed pistol if a nonspecific threat materializes – and the fastest draw is to have the gun already in hand. The Pocket Protector holster is designed for front pocket carry in pants or a jacket. The Pocket Protector keeps the firearm in the same general position so you can quickly locate the grip when you need to draw, conceals the shape of the gun so that its outline is not printed through the pants, and allows one-handed release of gun from both pocket and holster. Reinforcements at the holster mouth and beneath the trigger guard keep the holster stiff enough to allow a smooth draw and easy return to the holster, while also maintaining enough rigidity to prevent “printing” and shifting of the handgun. The holster’s hooked shape – at the base of the handgun’s trigger guard – is designed to catch on the pocket so that, with practice (using an unloaded firearm) and while using the proper pants, you can draw the firearm while the holster remains in your pocket or falls away. The Pocket Protector is ambidextrous and constructed of premium Center Cut Steerhide.

Here is the customer review:

“I bought this holster to use occasionally with my subcompact Glock 26 Gen 4. This one was the least expensive yet still good quality pocket holster out of all the ones I viewed online. The holster was a little tight on the gun at first but there was an instruction manual that came in the packaging that said it may be a bit tight. It also said if that was the case, put the unloaded gun inside a plastic bag and have it sit in the holster a few hours to overnight to let the leather stretch to fit. After doing that the gun fit snugly enough to stay in, even when I held the holster upside down and shook it vigorously.

The gun was still able to come out easily when drawing with the holster from inside the pocket. The rough exterior and the small angled piece of leather next to the trigger guard catches the edge of the pocket and keeps the holster in while you draw and has worked every time I’ve practiced drawing from the standing position. When drawing while sitting down I’ve pulled out the holster with the gun a couple of times but for the most part it stays in the pocket. The top of the holster is sewn in such a way that the opening does not collapse and you can re-holster easily.

The only con I’ve found from this holster is that it does not fully cover the rear sights. Some of the reviews and forums I looked at online from people who used pocket holsters all the time said that the squared edges of the Glock sights could eventually rub or tear holes in pockets made of thin material. Since I was only planning to use this on an occasional basis that did not affect me. If you are planning to use a pocket holster full time you may want to check some other designs. One other con is not from the holster but from the gun: the size. Subcompact Glocks are very small but are only just barely capable of being used as pocket pistols and even then you are definitely pushing it.

If you want to know how this holster and a subcompact Glock would look in your pants go get a paperback novel that measures 4.25 x 7 x 1.25 inches and put that in your pocket. Abracadabra, that’s how it’ll look. You can tell there’s something large in the pocket but it does not look like a gun. The forums I visited online said that if you plan on doing pocket carry the success of it will be dictated by how small the gun is, how deep the pockets are, how loose or tight fit of the pants, and to some extent the thickness of the material of the pants. Most recommended relaxed fit jeans and cargo pants (you still carry the gun in the front pockets even with cargo pants). The open end design of the holster even allows me just enough room to fit my Glock 19 Gen 4 in it but of course the longer grip would make it harder to conceal, so I don’t plan on using it in that capacity. One reviewer said that they just bought the holster to cover the trigger guard while the gun is kept at home or in the car, so if you plan on doing that and also have a compact sized Glock, it’ll work.

Don’t try that with a full or tactical size Glock because the longer slide will go past the edges of the holster and the front sight will get caught on the edge when you try to draw (not an issue on subcompact and compact sized Glocks). All in all, this is a good holster. It could be even better if the rear sights were covered but for the price on Amazon and the free shipping this was a real bargain.”
